Our mission is simple: to support and grow the sport of cyclocross in Australia and New Zealand.

CX Down Under is the brainchild of Tom McQuillan, an Australian and big ol’ cyclocross nerd. Although the website is new, the development of a single resource for cyclocross racers in Australia and New Zealand has been a long time coming.

Two mates and a brainwave

In early 2017, Tom and friend Rob Moss were simultaneously planning out their seasons in Victoria using a combination of spreadsheets, Facebook posts from race organisers, and the entrails of a sheep, when Rob wondered aloud why finding out the dates of your next CX race was so complicated.

Why couldn’t you find all the relevant information about Aussie CX racing in one place?

At that point the two were hit with a realisation.

‘Are you thinking what I’m thinking Rob?’

‘I think I am, Tom.’

‘It’s Cyclocross Calendar Australia time!’

Cyclocross Calendar Australia

Rob went and made a Facebook page, while Tom immediately made an Excel spreadsheet of all the relevant racing in Australia. As both of them are fans of truth in advertising, it was dubbed Cyclocross Calendar Australia.

People seemed to find the information useful, and so Tom grew the CX Calendar page from a place to find out when your next race was, to a discussion forum of the latest goings-on in Australian cyclocross, to finally (and most importantly) a place to appreciate cute dogs, which can’t be found anywhere else on the internet. True story.

CX Down Under

Now in 2020 the Calendar is going online (well, more online) and getting its own website, so that you can get even more of the Australian cyclocross you love directly into your veins. In addition to expanding onto its own website, CX Down Under is extending its focus across the Tasman Sea to New Zealand.

This is partly an apology for the Underarm Ball in 1981, and partly because we want to do all we can to spread the CX stoke across the detch.

Our mission is simple: to grow and support the sport of cyclocross in Australia and New Zealand. We hope you’ll join us for the journey.
